3/11 Aftermath On March 11th 2011 Japan sustained a magnitude 9.0 earthquake. The quake occurred at 14:46 local time in the western Pacific Ocean, 130 km (81 mi) east of Sendai, Honshu, Japan. Its epicenter was 373 km (232 mi) from Tokyo, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Three days later, on the night of March 14th, I got a ride to Sendai from Tokyo by car. Upon arrival I started hitchhiking and arrived in the town of Nobiru located in Higashi-Matsushima. The earthquake-triggered tsunami obliterated homes scattering all manner of personal possessions in its wake. According to the National Police Agency (NPA) the quake and tsunami claimed 15,698 lives with another 4,666 missing.
