Itate Village, renown for the quality of its beef, is located just outside the 20-km “off-limits” zone established around the Daiichi nuclear reactor. Due to the mountainous geography and the weather patterns during the Daiichi radiation leaks, Iitate became one of the most highly raidation-contaminated regions in Japan.

I made several bicycle trips across Itate, getting to know the farmers and documenting the cattle industry in the months after the nuclear leaks. After sharing my research with a NY times writer, I was hired as a freelancer to produce this article. It ran on the cover of the NY Times International Edition
